From Laon we came over the Chemin des Dames by Coucy-le Chateau and Meaux to Paris. The devastation particularly in the valley of the Somme is almost unbelievable. In the car we were following the route with a road map and where a village was marked you would often see absolutely nothing or perhaps only the shell of the church or one or two walls standing and of towns of five, ten or fifteen thousand people just a pile of brick. You can go for miles without seeing any human habitation; the trees all blasted and withered; the rusted debris of an army and the weeds and poppies running over everything. The great contrast is when at the edge you run back into a smiling countryside intensively cultivated and compare it with what you have just seen.
